In the translation industry, transcription means producing a written form or copy (meaning text) of an audio or video recording.
Transcription is often needed for audio or video recorded interviews, calls, focus groups, meetings, presentations, workshops, seminars and hearings in a number of settings including academic, media, legal, medical or business sectors.
There are three transcription styles:
- Intelligent verbatim
- Verbatim
- True verbatim
The distinction among the three types of transcription styles mentioned above lies on the level of editing. In other words, how “Verbatim” is the transcription meant to be. Verbatim is the Latin word meaning literally or word by word.
If no editing is made to the text, the transcription is said to be True Verbatim; if moderate editing is made to remove overall irrelevant words, the transcription is called Verbatim; and if the transcript is substantially edited, the transcription is called Intelligent Verbatim.
The editing often consists of removing:
- Fillers (e.g. Ah, um, uh, Ok, you know)
- False starts (incomplete sentences)
- Repetitions
- And correcting grammar or sentence structures for clarity.
